“I really need to go to the gym”…Does this sound familiar? Now that we’re a few weeks into the new year, it’s time to get back on track and focus on a healthy lifestyle. My schedule always gets out of whack when it’s a holiday break, and I’m out of my routine. It’s easy to fall into the procrastination trap, but I try to make it a point to hit the gym even if it’s the last thing I want to do. I wanted to share my tips that have worked for me, and I hope they help you stay motivated too!
Tips to Stay Motivated with Working Out
Find a workout buddy. Having someone to workout with will help hold you accountable to get to the gym plus it’s always more fun working out when you can catch up with a friend.
Tell yourself you’ll do 20 minutes, and then you can leave. On days when I’d rather do anything but workout, I tell myself I’ll swim/do cardio for 20-minutes then can go home. Then once I get started, I tell myself I can do 5 more minutes, 10 more, etc., and usually end up completing my entire workout.
Create personal goals and keep a journal of what you completed and how you felt after your workout. This is a great one if you prefer to work out alone. Whatever you choose for your goals, make sure they are trackable so you can look back and see how far you’ve come.
Schedule your workouts like an appointment and build in an hour to take care of your body every day. Write it in your calendar and keep it as you would any other important appointment.
Build in a rewards system. There are so many ways you can reward yourself for going to the gym, from buying a cute workout top to treating yourself to a smoothie bowl afterward. I remember a time when I was getting up at 4:30 am to swim, and my motivation was relaxing in the eucalyptus steam room when my workout was complete!
