Every December, once the bins come up from the basement, our modern farmhouse slowly shifts into holiday mode. Because our rooms are on the smaller side, I’ve learned that the magic is in the details — not in piling on more décor, but in choosing pieces that make each space feel cozy and intentional. If you’re looking for Christmas decorating ideas for small homes, here’s a peek at what I did this year and tips to decorate your own space.
Family Room
The family room (formally our living room) is where we end up most nights in December – movie marathons, wrapping gifts, tea in hand, so it has to feel inviting. With the deep navy walls and warm wood floors, even a few seasonal touches go a long way.
I tucked a slim tree into the corner, which feels festive without taking over the room. On the coffee table, I used a tray to corral candles and a few decorative pieces. It keeps things organized and still leaves room to set down a mug or a snack. And if there’s one thing that gives a space an instant holiday vibe, it’s a seasonal throw blanket and pillows.
Sitting Room
The sitting room (formally our family room) is always my favorite place to decorate because it transforms so easily. It’s a smaller space, but it has a great fireplace, and the oversized windows let in lots of natural light. This is where Christmas decorating ideas for small homes really shine — because you don’t need a lot to make it feel festive.
I focus on pieces that add height, like tapered candles, and cute seasonal decor. On the mantle, I add garland and a few sentimental accents that add charm without adding clutter. The bookshelf and side tables get a quick seasonal refresh, too. You can easily add festive touches with a few sprigs of greenery, ornaments, and vintage decorations. It’s simple, but it makes the whole room feel collected and cozy.
Seasonal pillows are the easiest way to shift the mood to festive. A mix of reds and neutrals instantly tied the whole space together.
Dining Room
Our tiny dining room needs to function first, decorate second — especially during the holidays. I kept things streamlined with a narrow runner and a few centerpieces that won’t compete with dishes or serving bowls.
One of my favorite tricks, especially in smaller homes, is to decorate upward rather than outward. The greenery and reindeer candles on top of the hutch add personality but stay completely out of the way. A flocked tree in the corner adds a soft glow during dinner and balances the space without making it feel cramped.
