This weekend was my daughter's birthday party sleepover. She wanted a Mardi Gras inspired party but now officially a teenager, she was past playing games and did not want decorations. I was still able to incorporate the theme into a craft, food and minimal decorations.
I made the banners with chalkboard cutouts and ribbon in the traditional Mardi Gras colors of purple, green and gold. I wrote the Happy Birthday message with chalkboard markers. I placed her one year picture and a recent picture on the mantel. The great thing about the chalkboard cutouts is you can erase and reuse again later.
The only other decorations were subway art that I framed and strung beads on. I found the subway art here: Mardi Gras Subway Art Freebie.
She wanted cupcakes in Mardi Gras colors. I found an easy recipe for Marti Gras Cupcakes at Four Sweetie Pies. Divide the cake batter into 3 bowls and add purple, green and gold food coloring gel to each. You only need 1/4 tsp of the gel to get a rich color.
Fill the cupcake wrapper with a scoop of each color side by side.
After they are baked, they look like this inside.
I used vanilla frosting and purple, green and gold sprinkles. I found some cute free Mardi Gras party circle printable's here: Free Printable Mardi Gras Party Circles and attached to a lollipop stick for the cupcake topper.
I always like to serve drinks out of mason jars but then I saw this idea here: Mason Jar Drink Glasses. I wrapped the top of the jar with purple, green and gold ribbon and added a party circle for a nametag. I used a hole punch on the lid so I was able to slip a straw in.
The girls decorated Mardi Gras masks for a craft, then ate dinner, watched a movie and played board games.
Favors for the party were a notebook with each girl's initial, matching pen, and beads.
I loved how the party turned out. Happy 13th birthday!
