Chicago Staycation

The hubs and I both got time off work, our daughter had a break from swimming for a few weeks and we found a cabin in Michigan to rent.  But then time got away from us and the cabin was no longer available so, what to do?  We decided to head downtown for a few days instead.  We moved to the suburbs 10 years ago and I still miss living in the city.  Usually at this point of the summer, we would have made it downtown at least 4 or 5 times but since we haven't been at all, this was the perfect alternative.

We stayed on Michigan Avenue so we would be close to the beach, restaurants, shopping and the buses to take us to the museums. While we never made it to the beach or the architectural cruise due to the temps in the 60's, instead we hit the museums and ate some amazing food!

Argo has the best chocolate mint tea!  They have a little outdoor garden that we hung out in for awhile.

The Hubs and M love cars, so we stopped by Perillo to look at the Lamborghini's and Ferrari's.  It's funny, M knows her expensive cars but I don't think she could point out a Honda Accord.

While the Hubs was chatting with one of the guys, they let M get in for a photo. The red car above had just sold for $600K!

The Fourth Presbyterian is such a beautiful church and has gorgeous stained glass.  We went here a few times when we lived in the city so I wanted M to see it since she was too young to remember.

I really wanted to try a few new restaurants but we went to the same old favorites - Joe's for fresh seafood. I had an amazing lobster roll for dinner!

It was cold and rainy day 2 so we hit the museums. The Museum of Contemporary Art was walking distance from the hotel.

A permanent exhibit of Alexander Calder mobiles and sculptures is on display.

An interesting exhibit of masks in front of mirrors.  Everyone was taking photos.  Kind of creepy but cool!

The museum shop had these fun jelly bracelets in every color!

Me and M outside the museum.

I'm not going to complain about the cold after the polar vortex last winter but it was time to switch the chocolate mint tea to hot.

 Here's our city selfie!

Dinner night two was someplace new. Owned by Lawry's Prime Rib, the Side Door had a rustic lounge type atmosphere with jazz playing in the background. The menu offered carved meats and some amazing appetizers. We tried the poutine. While definitely not a heath friendly dish, the poutine was to die for!  It's french fries with beef bacon gravy, pepperjack cheese, avocado & roasted tomatoes

Day three was sunny and warm again so we headed over to Lincoln Park Zoo.

That's a wrap of our staycation!  It was so nice to be downtown again and it was a relaxing 3 days!

  4. Loved reading about your staycation. It's a wonderful idea to discover our own towns. We spend so much effort in finding new places to see that we sometimes forget about re-discovering places close by. All the restaurants and the food looks so delicious and lovely. What a nice family trip. <3 XOXO, Elif

  16. It looks like you had so much fun! I love spending the day in Chicago and it's been forever since we've been. And the frostea from Argo? OMG! I was obsessed with making it at home for a while. Just mint tea, chocolate flavoring (like the coffee flavorings), and a little milk. It was a great substitute! Glad you made the most of your staycation!
