What to Know Before Starting a Blog

Hi everyone! Did you have a good weekend? One of my besties came over and helped me purge and organize my closet and other than that, I did lots of lounging and it felt great! I’m excited today to be joining some of my favorite bloggers for a six week blog hop series on blogging tips. The series will be on Tuesdays ending on May 31st. You can hop from blog to blog starting from the link at the end of my post.

The first prompt of our series is: What is one tip you have for anyone that may be thinking about starting a blog — something you wish someone had told you before you started?

I started my blog on a whim with no thought behind it. I had been reading blogs for a few years and one day my daughter suggested that I start my own. I immediately said no but after some discussion and persuasion from her, Doused in Pink was created a few hours later. I knew I wanted to blog about wearable, everyday fashion and also share DIY projects and other random things. What I didn’t know was how time consuming it would be and that it’s necessary to be organized and have a plan in order to not be overwhelmed.

It’s important to post on a consistent basis. Initially, I was posting on random days and times. Some weeks I’d post once and some week’s I’d post four times. It took me almost a year to set my regular posting schedule of Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12 AM CST. Once I did, I found that my pageviews increased and I had a higher percentage of return visitors. It’s okay to go off schedule and miss a post or have an extra one from time to time. Just make sure you let your readers know. Invite them back if you will have an extra post next week or if you are taking a break let them know when you will return. Your readers want to know what to expect. Posting on a consistent basis will also enhance your search engine optimization.

Plan out your posts. I have a theme for my blog and typically publish a lifestyle post on Tuesdays and a fashion post on Thursdays and plan out my posts one month out. I keep a running list of post ideas and use my Erin Condren life planner as my editorial calendar. I write in my post titles for the month then make a checklist of what is needed for each post. That way, I don’t miss anything and if I’m really organized, I can get ahead.

Use the scheduling tool on your blogging platform. It took me awhile to realize you can schedule your posts to go live at a specific time. Use this feature not only for consistency but if you have a hectic morning, you’re not worrying about hitting that publish key by a certain time.
