I Shopped My Closet and Created 7 New Outfits

shop my closet

Today I’m sharing how easy it is to make new outfits out of old clothes. When I swap out my closet seasonally, I put all the pieces I didn’t wear together in a bin. When it’s time to rotate them back in again, it’s easier for me to decide if I will keep or donate them.

If you’re wondering how I know what I didn’t wear, I put everything in my closet with the hangers reversed. And, as I wear clothes, I reverse the hanger. I’ve been doing this trick for years, and it helps you rediscover those forgotten pieces.

In addition, the hanger trick enables you to weed out what you don’t love anymore or is outdated and should be donated or recycled. So, for the past week, I made it a point to shop my closet and wear one item every day that was in that bin.

Why You Should Shop Your Closet

If you get bored with your everyday outfits, instead of going shopping, try to shop your closet. I think I’ve mentioned before that we wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time. So, there’s a high probability that you have some pieces hidden in your closet that you can make new outfits with.

Shopping your closet challenges your creativity, allowing you to see it through a fresh lens so you can make the most of what you already have. Here are the seven outfits I created when I shopped in my closet last week.

Seven New Outfits

Monday

These pants were a hand-me-down from my daughter that I always forget about. The fabric is lightweight, airy, and super comfortable. Styling them was as simple as adding a black top and sandals for a work-from-home outfit.

Tuesday

Open-stitch pullovers are on trend this season, yet I haven’t worn this mesh sweater since I styled it in this post two years ago. While the dark wine color lends itself more to fall, the contrast against the white pants and neutral sandals made it summer ready.

Wednesday

I bought this sweater tank from Loft last year and wore it once. In addition, the wide-leg pants were last seen here. Even though this outfit is made up of neutrals, the mix of textures keeps it from being boring.

Thursday

This dress is an oldie. I bought it when my daughter was in middle school (she just graduated from college). The beauty of a shirtdress is that it can be worn as a dress or a duster.

Friday

Ruching on a dress is universally flattering, and I don’t know why I haven’t worn this dress in years. I added a long sleeve shrug sweater to stay comfortable in the air conditioning indoors. For more ideas on how to style a ruched dress, check out this post.

Saturday

These jeans, last seen here, were getting ready to go into my donate pile because they were too big. I’m glad I tried them on again because they fit perfectly now. I wore this outfit to the Cure concert last weekend.

Sunday

Kimonos are a great lightweight layering piece that goes with everything from shorts to jeans and dresses to skirts. They also dress up a beach outfit instantly. This one was last seen here four years ago.
