3 Shoe Travel Packing Rule

3 shoe travel packing rule

I love a good girlsโ€™ trip, but packing for one? Thatโ€™s where I used to overthink everything. Iโ€™d throw in four, maybe five pairs of shoes โ€œjust in case,โ€ and then wear the same two pairs the whole weekend. The rest? Theyโ€™d just take up space, get tossed around in my suitcase, and come home untouched.

After starting my new job last year and traveling every few months, I finally got tired of the overpacking cycle. Thatโ€™s when I landed on my 3-shoe packing rule, and itโ€™s been a game-changer. One casual sneaker, one versatile sandal or flat, and one dressier pair. Thatโ€™s it. It works for work trips, it works for vacations, and as I found out on my recent girlsโ€™ weekend to South Haven, Michigan, it works even when youโ€™re packing for unpredictable weather, lots of walking, and plenty of activities.

Why I Swear by the 3-Shoe Rule

  • The 3-shoe packing rule frees up space โ€“ Shoes are suitcase hogs. Limiting yourself to three leaves room for the fun stuff (like that new top you’ll probably buy).
  • It kills decision fatigue โ€“ Every pair works with every outfit, so getting dressed in the morning is quick, even if youโ€™re running late.
  • Itโ€™s real-life tested โ€“ Iโ€™ve been using this rule for the past year and have never wished Iโ€™d packed more.

Bonus tip: Itโ€™s trickier in winter when boots are involved, but I still stick to it. Iโ€™ll pack one casual sneaker, one ankle boot, and one dressier boot or bootie, and I always wear the bulkiest pair for travel.

3 Shoe Travel Packing Rule in Action: What I Packed

  • White Sneakers โ€“ My go-to for travel days, shopping, and walking around town.
  • Flat Sandals โ€“ Easy to slip on for casual outings and perfect for the beach or pier.
  • Dressy Sandals โ€“ Comfortable but polished enough for dinners and evenings out.

How I Styled Each Outfit with the 3 Shoe Packing Rule

My Travel Uniform

A skort, tank top, white button-up, sneakers. This one is my comfort meets pulled-together uniform. It worked for hours in the car and still felt cute enough if I needed to meet the group in town when I arrived.

Day 1: What I Wore

It was much cooler in Michigan so I wore white denim, a navy sleeveless knit and sneakers for shopping and lunch the first day. This combo hit the sweet spot, cute and comfy for walking around and trying things on, but polished enough for our lunch.

That evening we went to The Groovin’ Grove for cocktails, apps and live music. The dressy flat sandals that I included in my 3-shoe packing rule were perfect with my crochet romper and woven circle bag. Just the right amount of dressed up for live music without sacrificing comfort and no wobbling on uneven sidewalks.

Day 2: Outfits

Saturday morning we hit the South Haven Farmer’s Market followed by more activities in town. My printed shirtdress + sneakers = an easy, breezy outfit that took me from the market to the salt cave to antique shopping.

For a long walk on the pier to the lighthouse and then dinner, my white studded flat sandals were perfect with a white mixed media dress. I slipped them off to wander barefoot in the sand, then popped them back on for the walk back into town.

Tips to Make the 3 shoe Rule Work for You

  1. Pick your shoes first โ€“ Build outfits around them so everything works together.
  2. Stick to a color palette โ€“ Neutrals or metallics mix and match with anything.
  3. Test-walk before packing โ€“ If you canโ€™t last a few hours in them, they donโ€™t make the cut.
  4. Plan for the weather โ€“ In cooler temps, your 3-shoe packing rule lineup might look like sneakers, ankle boots, and a dressier bootie.
  5. Embrace repeats โ€“ Wearing the same shoe twice isnโ€™t boring itโ€™s what makes your outfits look cohesive.

Final Thoughts on the 3 Shoe Travel Packing Rule

The 3-shoe packing rule kept my packing light, my outfits versatile, and my feet happy. Itโ€™s one of those small changes that makes travel easier, whether youโ€™re heading to a lakeshore town for the weekend, hopping on a work trip or taking a week long vacation. Let me know if you’re going to try it on your next getaway!

  1. Now this is a rule I already use! I usually only take 2 pairs for a weekend. I wear trainers (sneakers) for travel and on my daily walks, and take a pair of sandals for daytime outings/evenings.

What a great idea! I think the 3 shoe rule is the way to go – literally! It makes great sense and you are so right about not having to deal with decision fatigue!

  3. What a good rule! I need to take this to heart with my packing for Italy. I makes so much sense and I love every look with these shoes you packed. Thanks so much for the link up Jill!

  4. I can do 3 shoes for shorter trips but my trips to Turkiye, that is tough, especially if I am going to different locations.

I love this rule, what a great idea for a post! I am going to utilize this for sure! Your outfits were all so adorable and perfect for the lake town and the weather!

  6. Mireille

I love this rule! I have been known to overpack lately and shoes do take space! I am going to try to stick to this the next few trips I am taking.

  7. Sounds like a plan! I think sticking to a colour palette is the best to I ever got!

  8. I'm a great one for packing 3 pairs of sandals and skipping any sort of closed toe shoe… though I'm struggling with a packing list for our hiking trip out west as I'll obviously need my hiking boots and dread the thought of wearing them through the airport and on the plane!

  9. I had to laugh when I read this. The first time we went to London (for our 25th anniversary), I packed an entire suitcase full of shoes. It was back when the rolling suitcases were just coming out. Needless to say, the wheel broke on that case in the train station when we first got into London! I had to lug the thing everywhere. I've never forgotten that and know to pare down on shoes (pardon the pun). I don't know that I've stuck to a 3 pair minimum, but I do arrange outfits around the shoes. Thanks for the link up!

  10. It's a great rule and one that I normally follow-unless I am meeting up with you stylish ladies! Haha! You looked fabulous and I love your taste in footwear!

  11. That is a very sensible rule and works for all weather and occasions. What great looks!

  12. What a brilliant idea, I love this so much. I am definitely not an over-packer when it comes to shoes but this three-shoe rule is a game changer. I love how you showed exactly how to make it work for different outfits and activities, it's so helpful.

  13. This is brilliant! I always want to bring a pair of heels, but every time I've done that I haven't worn them (too far of a walk, just tired and don't want to bother with heels, etc.).

  14. I've always said that you should start your packing planning with shoes.
I think this works for all kinds of trips but I will say that for our week long trips.I might take four pair. LoL

  15. This is such a great rule for packing. Will be trying it out this fall. I tend to wear my boxier/bulkier shoes for travel and then stick my lighter, easier to pack shoes in my suitcase. You are right, half the time I don't wear everything I have packed – clothes or shoes.

  16. Excellent idea!

  17. As someone who always tends to bring way too many shoes, this is a rule I need to follow. I'm going to try it on my next trip!

  18. This is such a great rule!! I don't take a lot of trips, but I'd definitely follow this rule next time. I am all about not packing more than I need, but always worry if I'll have everything I need and then overpack, haha. I love seeing your pretty outfits here and your shoes worked out perfectly!!

    Make Life Marvelous

  19. This is a really sensible rule for travelling. I used to take too much of everything but now I'm a bit better at editing what I pack. I find heels uncomfortable now so I stick to flats or low wedges. I usually travel in trainers and take flat sandals and my wedge espadrilles in neutrals/metallics which go with just about everything. I love your crochet romper and the shirt dress!
