Why Argyle Knits are Back this Fall

There’s something about fall that always brings me back to cozy textures, rich color, and classic patterns. This year, argyle knits are back, and they’re having a well-deserved moment.

If you grew up in the ’80s, you probably remember argyle sweaters being everywhere. I know I had a few back then, and I never thought I’d be reaching for the pattern again. But fashion has a way of reinventing old favorites, and this season’s take feels polished, fresh, and wearable.

When I spotted this soft pink argyle sweater, it instantly reminded me why argyle knits are making a big comeback. It’s nostalgic yet versatile, bringing a playful twist to fall outfits without feeling dated.

The Return of a Classic

why argyle knits are back

We’ve seen so many heritage-inspired patterns this fall, like plaids, tweeds, and now argyle. The difference this time around is in the details: slightly oversized silhouettes, updated color palettes, and softer, cozier knits that fit seamlessly into everyday wardrobes.

Argyle knits are back because they bridge the gap between timeless and trend-worthy. They add just enough pattern to make an outfit interesting, yet they still feel easy to wear. Think of them as a quiet statement piece, something that makes you look pulled together with minimal effort.

How I’m Styling My Argyle Sweater

why argyle knits are back for fall 2025

For this look, I paired my pink argyle knit with wide-leg denim. The jeans’ relaxed fit keeps the outfit comfortable. My burgundy sling bag ties in with the sweater’s color palette, and the studded ballet flats add a subtle touch of edge. It’s put-together but still easygoing, which is exactly how I like to dress this time of year.

If you’ve been wondering why argyle knits are back, this is it: they’re versatile enough to work with the pieces you already own, and they instantly give an outfit a little personality.

Why Argyle Flatters at Any Age

Argyle is one of those rare patterns that feels playful but sophisticated. The crisscross lines naturally draw the eye inward, creating a flattering and balanced effect. And with today’s updated cuts with slightly cropped hems and roomy sleeves, it’s a trend that feels current and still comfortable. Whether you style your argyle knit with jeans, trousers, or a skirt, it adds texture and visual interest to your outfit.

Easy Ways to Bring Argyle Into Your Wardrobe

If you’re thinking about adding argyle to your closet this season, start small. Here are a few simple ideas:

  • Play with color. Skip the neutrals and opt for unexpected shades, such as pastels or jewel tones.
  • Mix textures. Argyle knits pair beautifully with denim, faux leather, or wool trousers.
  • Keep accessories minimal. A structured bag and delicate jewelry let the pattern stand out.
  • Balance your proportions. Pair an oversized sweater with slim jeans, or a fitted vest with wide-leg pants.

I love that this sweater feels like a little nod to the past, but fits right into my everyday wardrobe. It’s proof that sometimes, the classics always come back in style.

  1. Good news that Argyle sweaters are back, I've seen lots of them online!

  2. I remember wearing argyle sweaters in the early 2000s! Don't own any currently and I was in elementary/middle school when they were popular so if I still had my old sweaters, I wouldn't fit in them.

  3. I've noticed lots of trends from my high school years making a comeback! We were watching Nashville 911 and Jessica Capshaw's character was wearing a v-neck sweater that reminded me so much of a couple sweaters I had from the Weathervane store that I remember using for my senior photos. Even my husband mentioned he remembered that sweater and I'm kind of excited to see that come back around as well.

  4. The sweater is fabulous but dying over those jeans paired with it! Such a chic fall look Jill. Thanks so much for the link up!

I love argyle! I think it's the preppy vibe I love so much! Your denim looks great too!

  6. I would absolutely wear argyle again, especially this sweater – so pretty! I grew up in the 90s, but argyle just a huge boost when Mean Girls came out and girls were wearing it everywhere (including me, haha!).

  7. That sweater is adorable, and I love how you styled it, Jill! XO

I like that it's a one and done: no need to add accessories over the sweater, the argyle pattern does all the work.

  10. Jill, oh what a perfect ode to argyle! I’ve always had a soft spot for the pattern too — there’s just something about those diamonds that feels both nostalgic and sharp. Your pink version is a lovely, modern take on the classic, and you've styled it so well with wide-leg denim.

  12. I love it now! But back in the days only the posh kids wore them and I didn't like it at all. I like them on Gerben a lot too

  13. Cat’s Wire

I love the pattern, but don't think I ever actually owned a piece of Argyle clothing.
I did use the pattern in a bead loomed bracelet, though, and really liked it.

  14. You look amazing in this outfit! I love the way those jeans flare at the bottom…definitely reminding me of my teenage years in the 70s! I love argyle. I do have a couple. One is a cashmere from LS Ayres (which would equate to Marshall Fields though not quite as good). It's probably close to 30 years old. Unfortunately, it's also a tunic, but I bet I can make it look modern. Thanks for those tips and the link party!

I've always loved argyle..being an 80's teen and all that! I have a sweater vest right now that is argyle but that's it. I need more!

  18. I loved these back when they were trending in high school! So excited to see them back again.

  19. I love the sweater and how you styled it. The crossbody bag is fabulous too!
