What to Pack for a Fall Trip

what to pack for a fall trip

Fall is my favorite time to travel. The weather is cool, the leaves are turning, and I get to wear sweaters again. When I’m figuring out what to pack for a fall trip, I keep it simple. A few pieces that all work together, plus accessories to change things up. This time I packed light with one pair of jeans and three cashmere sweaters from NYDJ. Thank you to NYDJ for gifting the pieces in this post. All opinions are my own.

My Fall Travel Capsule

The Kelsey Stovepipe Jean

This is a straight leg jean that works with every shoe I own. I wore it full length with booties and cuffed with boots and flats, so one pair gave me a few different looks. That’s a lot of mileage from one pair of jeans in a carry on.

The Cashmere Turtleneck in Cream

Warm, soft, and it goes with everything. A cream turtleneck always looks polished, even on a travel day.

The Cashmere Crew in Yellow

Yellow is a trending color this fall and it’s perfect against the fall leaves. This sweater is lightweight enough to layer and bright enough to wear on its own.

The Cashmere Short Sleeve Cardigan in Brown

I like this sweater worn open as a layer. The short sleeves keep it light over a fitted top, and the brown, another trending fall color, is the perfect neutral.

Three Easy Fall Trip Outfits

I tucked the turtleneck into my jeans and added a snakeprint belt to define my waist. My black booties have a snakeprint toe, so the two tie together. A quilted black sling bag keeps my hands free for walking around town and grabbing coffee. This is what I’d wear for a full day of exploring.

Outfit 2: casual fall outfit

The yellow sweater with a brown beaded necklace and brown Chelsea boots feels like fall to me. I cuffed my jeans to show off the boots and carried the same black sling bag. It’s comfortable enough for a long walk and still looks put together for lunch.

Outfit 3: elevated casual outfit

For dinner, I wore the brown cardigan open over a black short sleeve tissue mock turtleneck and added a gold cross necklace. Cap toe flats and a brown suede top handle bag dress it up a little. Flats also pack flat, which is one more reason I like them for travel.

Once everything is in the suitcase, it all mixes. The cardigan layers over the turtleneck, the yellow crew works with the black booties, and every sweater goes with the jeans.

Tips for Packing Light on a Fall Trip

One pair of jeans that works with every shoe. Cuffing them changes the look without adding anything to your bag.

Cashmere rolls up small and keeps you warm without the bulk.

I stuck to my 3 shoe packing rule for this trip too. Black booties for exploring, brown Chelsea boots for long walks, and cap toe flats for dinner. I wear the bulkiest pair on the plane.

Two bags cover it. A hands free crossbody for the day and a structured bag for dinner.

Accessories do most of the work. A belt, a necklace, or a different pair of shoes makes the same jeans feel new.

A Small Fall Capsule With Room to Spare

Figuring out what to pack for a fall trip doesn’t have to mean overpacking. Three soft sweaters, one great pair of jeans, and a few accessories gave me plenty of outfits with room left in my bag. I used to pack for every possible weather scenario. Now my answer to what to pack for a fall trip fits in a carry on.
