Red pants tend to fall into that love them, but now what? category. They catch your eye in the store, you picture them looking great on… and then they sit in your closet because styling them feels harder than it should. The truth is, red pants are easier to style than they get credit for, especially when you treat them the same way you would any other statement bottom. If you’ve ever wondered what top to wear with red pants, this post is for you.
Below are eight outfits that feel realistic and wearable, built around tops and shoes that most of us already own or gravitate toward.
Why Red Pants Are Trending Right Now
Red has been everywhere lately. We’re seeing it on runways, in accessories, and especially in bottoms. After years of neutrals dominating our closets, designers are leaning into color again, and red feels like the boldest option that’s still classic.
But here’s the key: red pants aren’t trending because they’re flashy. They’re trending because they’re surprisingly easy to style when you keep the rest of the outfit simple. Think of them the same way you would olive or camel, as a color that adds interest without needing a lot of extras.
Why Red Is More Versatile Than You Might Expect
If you’re unsure what top to wear with red pants, it helps to stop thinking of red as a “special occasion” color. Red works best when it’s balanced with pieces that already feel comfortable and familiar.
A simple knit, a crisp tee, a classic stripe, or a neutral layer is often all it takes. The key is letting the pants do the talking while everything else stays uncomplicated.
8 Easy Ways to Style Red Pants for Everyday Wear
black and White Striped Sweater + Sneakers

This is the most casual look of the bunch and a great place to start if red feels intimidating. A classic striped sweater keeps the outfit grounded, and sneakers make it practical for everyday wear. This is an easy weekend outfit that proves red pants can be worn just like denim.
White Tee + Open Chambray Shirt + chelsea boots

This is one of the most versatile ways to wear red pants. The fitted white tee keeps the look clean, the chambray adds structure without bulk, and black Chelsea boots give it a little edge without feeling dressy.
Black Turtleneck + Black Lug-Sole Loafers

If you’re looking for what to wear with red pants that feels streamlined and intentional, this combination does the job. A black turtleneck tones down the red, and lug-sole loafers add weight and balance to the wide-leg silhouette.
Pink printed Sweater + Gold Ballet Flats

Pink and red together feels fresh. A printed sweater adds interest, while the gold ballet flats add a festive touch.
Camel Oversized Sweater + Brown Wedge Booties

Warm neutrals are an easy match for red pants. An oversized camel sweater softens the color and feels cozy, while brown wedge booties tie the colors together.
Black Blouse + Tweed booties

A black blouse is one of the simplest answers to what top to wear with red pants when you need something slightly more polished. Tweed booties add interest without overpowering the outfit.
Navy Accordion Top + Black Booties

This is a dressier way I’m styling red pants in this post. The navy accordion top brings structure and texture, which instantly elevates the look. It’s a combination that feels intentional and refined.
Ivory Lace Top + Black Heels

Ivory lightens up the red without washing it out, and the black pumps elongate the leg. It’s feminine, elegant, and still very wearable.
If red pants have been sitting in your closet waiting for the “right” occasion, I hope these outfits show they don’t need one. Once you know what top to wear with red pants, they become just as practical as any other statement bottom, easy to dress up, easy to dress down, and far more versatile than they first appear.

I tried a pair of red pants this week but they were too long so sent them back. You've created so many stunning outfits I'm going to find another pair. I hadn't considered how good they look with simple styling!
This is a fabulous post, Jill. Red pants can feel like a big style commitment, but you made them look so easy to wear. I loved seeing how different tops shifted the whole mood of the outfit.

Great ideas Jill! I had red pants a few years back and wish I had held onto them. I especially like the tweed booties you paired with yours!
xo,

I love your red pants and all the ways you styled them. It's making me miss my red pants from a few years ago. I was sad to let them go but I wore them so much that they needed to be replaced, except I never did replace them and now I am thinking it's time to. Anyway, love the looks but WOW that accordion top is stunning. it's so much drama without being too much. I also love the lace top that you have on, I am really into lace at the moment.

I didn't know red pants were trending again. Boy, things go in and out of style more quickly these days. I think I still have mine from when they were trending a few years ago, but they might be the skinny style so then they are probably out-of-style. I love all the ways you styled them, especially with the camel sweater. I remember styling my old red pants with chambray too,
Love all the ways you styled these pants Jill! I didn't realize how much I would love it with light tan. Thanks for the inspiration!

These are all lovely options! I've never owned red pants but do tend to pair red with white, ivory, back, or even gold/silver the most.
Love, love, love!!
red pants are such a fabulous statement piece and I love how you styled them in so many ways.

Those red pants are fantastic. I am a huge fan of stripes, so the black and white striped look is right up my street. Love the black TB bag too. Happy Holidays! <3 /Madison

Gosh, they look fabulous. They really stand out.
I love those pants, and these are all fabulous looks. The last outfit is my favorite though! XO
My favorite is with the camel sweater! I almost got a pair of red pants before the holidays, but I already felt like I was going over budget on a few accent pieces… so, I didn't get them. And now you're making me totally regret that decision!!! Cute looks!!!

I don't think I have any red pants, but after reading this, that may change! I love how just changing your shoes changes the whole feel of the outfit! Thanks for the link up, too!

I love those red pants, years ago I had some red jeans and loved them. I would always wear them with a white vest top which seems so basic now. What great looks! I love the one with the black turtleneck!
Red pants are such a great addition to your closet, especially during the holidays! These are all fabulous ideas on how to style them!
I don't own a pair of red pants but now I think I need a pair! You styled so many great looks with them. I lean towards the black turtleneck look but they are all so stylish! Happy Holidays!
So many wonderful ideas. Who knew red pants could be so versatile.
I love these outfits! I have some very old red pants that I need to replace. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas! Thanks for linking!
