Trade the usual hotspots for places that feel a little more personal, and a lot more affordable.

1. Montenegro’s Adriatic Coast

Montenegro’s Adriatic coastline offers dramatic landscapes where the rugged mountains meet the deep blue waters. Towns like Budva and Kotor make lovely day trips, where you can walk through ancient, cobbled streets and appreciate the medieval architecture. They’re also far less crowded than similar destinations like Dubrovnik in Croatia. 

Accommodation prices are more affordable compared to neighbouring Croatia, while the food is both delicious and inexpensive. For a more local touch, try one of the family-run restaurants offering fresh seafood with a side of stunning sea views. Plus, if you’re a fan of outdoor activities, there are many on offer. 

2. Portugal’s Western Algarve

If you’re looking for a coastal escape that allows you to delve into authentic Portuguese culture, the Western Algarve is a hidden treasure. Unlike the more developed eastern Algarve, the western part of the region remains quieter, making it ideal for those seeking relaxation away from large crowds. You’ll find that Portugal is one of the most budget-friendly countries in Europe with plenty of all-inclusive holidays on offer, and the Algarve region is no exception. 3. Bulgaria’s Black Sea Coast

With its sandy beaches and clear waters, it’s a place where you can unwind without the hefty price tag of more popular destinations. The beauty of the Black Sea Coast lies in its variety. You can find cheap, clean accommodation with plenty of local seafood restaurants offering delicious meals at unbeatable prices. If you’re into history, the UNESCO-listed town of Nessebar is more than 3,000 years old, where you can explore medieval religious architecture and ornamental ceramics art. 

With Bulgaria’s affordable cost of living, you’ll get a lot of value for your money.

4. Albania’s Riviera

The country’s pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and mountainous backdrop offer a breathtaking setting for a budget-friendly escape. Places like Dhermi, Himara, and Jale Beach provide an authentic Mediterranean experience without the usual price tag. You’ll find traditional beachside tavernas, relaxed vibes, and fewer crowds compared to the likes of Italy or Greece.

Albania is an incredibly affordable destination. Accommodation is often family-owned, giving you a chance to experience true Albanian hospitality. The food is fresh, with seafood being a staple.
