3 Ways to Wear a Black Jumpsuit

A woman stands and shows 3 ways to wear a black jumpsuit

It took me a while to get on board with the jumpsuit trend, but they became a staple in my closet as soon as I did. They instantly give you a polished look and are a chic alternative to jeans and a tee or a maxi dress. I love a one-and-done outfit, and today I’ll show you 3 ways to wear a black jumpsuit!

How to Wear a Black Jumpsuit (For Any Occasion!)

One of my favorite things about jumpsuits – especially a classic black jumpsuit – is that they are so versatile. You can pair a black jumpsuit with almost anything. Depending on how you style it, a black jumpsuit can be the perfect outfit for anything from a day of shopping and brunch with friends to a day at the office or even a wedding.

Still need some help figuring out how to style a plain black jumpsuit? Grab some simple styling tips below, and then keep reading for my three favorite ways to wear a black jumpsuit.

Style Tip #1: Find Your Perfect Jumpsuit

When picking a jumpsuit, consider your height. If you’re short, go for a slim, cropped style and if you’re tall, opt for wide-leg and floor-length.

Style Tip #2: Choose Your Accessories Wisely

The accessories you wear with a black jumpsuit are a key part of helping you either dress up or dress down the outfit. Adding a strand of large power pearls converts a black jumpsuit into a smart business look. Pairing a statement necklace or large hoop earrings with a black jumpsuit will help make your outfit ready for a night out. Wearing a T-shirt underneath a jumpsuit and adding a baseball hat will make your outfit more casual.

Style Tip #3: Consider Your Shoes

The shoes you wear with a jumpsuit are a key part of your outfit. Can you wear ankle boots with a jumpsuit? What about sneakers? Like with most things in fashion (and in life)….it depends. I like to base my shoes on the style of the jumpsuit and on the occasion or place I’m wearing it to.

A slim, cropped jumpsuit can look great with statement sneakers or ankle boots. A wider leg jumpsuit, on the other hand, tends to look best with sandals or flats. Try out different jumpsuit and shoe combinations to figure out your favorite ways to wear a black jumpsuit.

All right, now that we’ve talked about ways to wear a black jumpsuit, let’s get onto the 3 jumpsuit looks I put together!

3 (Totally Different) Ways to Wear a Black Jumpsuit

There are so many ways to wear a jumpsuit. These three are a few of my favorites.

CASUAL RUNNING ERRANDS OUTFIT: How to Wear a Jumpsuit Casually

I love wearing a black jumpsuit for a day of errands or shopping with friends. It’s even easier to throw on than jeans and a T-shirt and the slightly elevated look means you can totally meet up with friends for lunch or even dinner without having to go home and change.

In this case, I paired my favorite black jumpsuit with a smocked top underneath. I love the way the straps of the jumpsuit look with the cut of this top. If you don’t have a top like this, there are lots of other things you can wear under a jumpsuit for a more casual look.

What to Wear Under a Black Jumpsuit:

  • A smocked top
  • A high-neck tank top
  • A classic t-shirt
  • A long-sleeved shirt for colder weather

Because I was working on how to wear a black jumpsuit casually, for this outfit I added a pair of white athletic sneakers and some aviator sunglasses. Large, statement hoop earrings add the perfect touch of glam to take this outfit from the grocery store to a restaurant and everything in between.

BRUNCH WITH FRIENDS OR DATE NIGHT OUTFIT: How to Dress Up a Plain Black Jumpsuit

One of my favorite things to do with a black jumpsuit is to dress it up and wear it out for a date night or a meal with friends. And luckily, it doesn’t take much to make a jumpsuit feel like a fancy outfit.

How to Dress Up a Black Jumpsuit:

  • Pair it with a flowy kimono or shawl
  • Add simple, elegant jewelry
  • Keep your shoes simple and classic

In this particular outfit, I added a gorgeous, eye-catching blue floral kimono shawl on top of my black jumpsuit. While there’s a lot of options for what to wear over a black jumpsuit, this blue kimono is definitely one of my favorites. The bright color and the flowy material immediately takes this jumpsuit to another level.

I paired this outfit with simple, layered gold necklaces and wore neutral, strappy sandals so that the jumpsuit and the kimono were the stars of the show.

WEAR TO WORK OUTFIT: What to Wear Under a Black Jumpsuit

Even when I got over my hesitation of wearing jumpsuits in general, I didn’t really feel comfortable wearing one to work. They always felt too casual or too dressy, and they definitely didn’t scream, “office attire.”

But, as it turns out, a classic black jumpsuit is a great foundational piece for a work-wear outfit! I just needed to figure out what to wear under a black jumpsuit to make it office-ready.

How Do You Dress Up a Black Jumpsuit for Work?

  • Keep accessories simple
  • Incorporate a classic work-wear piece to your outfit
  • Pair with dressier shoes for an elevated look

In this outfit, I paired my jumpsuit with a white collared shirt – a classic staple of the office – and black wedge sandals that add a little bit of height. I kept my jewelry understated, wearing just a simple pendant and small drop earrings.

Other Ways to Wear A Black Jumpsuit

These three outfits may have been my favorite ways to wear a black jumpsuit, but the options are virtually endless when it comes to turning a jumpsuit into a stylish outfit.

Try pairing your jumpsuit with different shirts underneath it, such as a long-sleeved T-shirt or even a blouse with puffed sleeves. Or, pair your jumpsuit with boots and a cardigan as a transitional fall or spring outfit. Mix and match accessories or add a bold hat, scarf or bag.

No matter how you style a classic black jumpsuit, you’ll be ready to take on just about any occasion, whether you’re heading to the school pick-up line or a night out with friends.
