In my early 20s, my entire wardrobe was black. Well, I should say, outside of work, it was. For the office, I remember wearing suits with colorful pumps. My favorite stores back then were the two extremes of Le Château and Casual Corner. Do you remember those? I don’t think the term monochrome was in my vocabulary back then, but my go-to weekend outfit was a fitted top, black skirt, black tights, and combat boots.
Fast forward to today, and I still like the ease of an all-black outfit. Black is a universally flattering color and slimming. You know they say every woman should own a little black dress. Black is also a great neutral to build your outfits around.
With that said, let’s talk about skirts for a minute. Mini skirts were a big trend this summer, and maxi skirts are returning this fall. Because maxi’s keep your legs fully covered, they work well to transition your wardrobe into fall and even winter. They’re suitable for work, a night out, or a casual stroll on a fall day. This black maxi skirt is a recent addition to my closet and checks all of the boxes: it’s flowy with a tiered silhouette and has a slit up the thigh to show just the right amount of skin. I’ve put together three outfits with my black skirt to show you how versatile it is.
The Best Shirts To Wear With Long Skirts
A question I often get is what types of tops work best with maxi skirts. The good news is there are plenty of options. You can wear a wide range of tops with a maxi skirt. Everything from a fitted tank top or tee, a flowy boho blouse, a classic button-up, or even a graphic tee. The key is to ensure your top is not too baggy and overwhelming your frame.
Here are some ideas: For a classic look, try a long-sleeved button-up and knot it to define your waist. A cami always works well by adding a touch of femininity and instantly dressing up the look. For those crisp fall days, belt a pullover sweater.
3 Ways to Wear a Long Black Skirt
1 – Edgy Black Maxi Skirt Outfit
To create this look, I picked a black sleeveless swiss dot blouse. To play with proportions, pair with a cropped or shorter jacket. My tan moto jacket also breaks up the black. I choose a snake print belt and boots to add some fun and edgy vibes. If you’re not a fan of snake print, leopard print accessories and shoes would have the same effect.
2 – Black Maxi Skirt Outfit for Work
For a more sophisticated look, style with a cami and blazer. Layering is a great way to add interest to your outfits. The bright pink blazer breaks up an all-black look like the moto jacket above. Another way you could style this outfit would be to button up the blazer and wear the belt over it.

3 – Casual Outfit with a Black Maxi Skirt
I saved my favorite outfit with a black skirt for last. You know I always love a dress or skirt with sneakers. In the warmer months, I’d choose a graphic tee. But, now that we have fall weather, I grabbed a cozy knit sweater. My style trick for keeping the sweater waist length is knotting the back with a ponytail holder and then tucking it under. The result is no bulk, and you cannot see the knot.
