If you’ve ever stared at a space in your home and thought, “This room could use a little love,” then you’ll appreciate today’s reveal. Our primary bedroom before and after transformation is proof that you don’t need a full gut renovation to make a space feel brand new. With a few strategic upgrades like hardwood floors, paint, and DIY molding, we turned our tired bedroom into a cozy retreat.
After living with carpet, blank walls, and a mostly white color palette, we were ready for a change. This room had always been functional, but it didn’t feel finished or very us. So, we slowly brought our vision to life.
Primary Bedroom Before

Primary Bedroom Refresh
Swapping Carpet for Hardwood

One of the most noticeable changes in our primary bedroom before and after is the flooring. We replaced the original worn-out wall-to-wall carpet with hickory hardwood, which instantly elevated the space. When our local Lumber Liquidators went out of business, we jumped on the opportunity to grab flooring at 90% off. It was a steal at $273 total!
We like to tackle projects ourselves. This time, we removed the carpet and all of the staples and then hired a contractor to install the flooring. The warm wood tone feels clean, fresh, and much more timeless than carpet.
Added Molding

To bring in architectural interest and make the space feel more polished, we added wall molding on all four walls using molding kits from Amazon. It was a bit of a learning curve at first. There’s lots of measuring and leveling involved, but once we installed the first panel, the rest came together quickly.
This simple DIY gave the room a custom look without the custom price. It’s one of those little upgrades that make a big visual difference in the primary bedroom before and after.
Bold Paint color

After months of looking at paint samples, I kept coming back to a rich, moody teal. The deep color instantly made the room feel grounded and sophisticated.
Painting the walls this deep hue completely transformed the space. If you followed along on Instagram, you may remember I shared my paint samples in stories and asked for input. Thank you to everyone who voted! Newberg Green was the clear winner, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out!
Lately, I’ve been seriously considering taking it a step further and painting the trim and ceiling the same color. I’ve seen this done over and over on design shows, and the result is always stunning. A room wrapped in a single rich hue feels dramatic and elevated. Right now, the contrast with the white trim still works, but don’t be surprised if this room gets one more round of paint in the near future!
What do you think? Would you go all in with trim and ceiling too, or keep the contrast?
Furniture and Decor
Another goal with this project was to work with what we had. We’ve had the same bedroom furniture since the late 90s. The lamps and mirror are also existing, but the bedding was pretty new. I purchased it a few months before we started the room refresh, and luckily, it still works.

We also added a new rug from Rugs Direct to ground the space. The subtle, distressed pattern ties together the flooring and wall color, adding warmth and visual interest without competing with everything else. We hung black-and-white wedding photos above the bed in simple black frames, and I added a faux fiddle leaf fig tree in the corner to bring in some greenery.

We also added a few tech-friendly upgrades that double as decor. One of my favorite purchases from last year’s Black Friday sales was the Hissense Frame TV. It came with the frame included, and I love that you can upload your own photos and set them to scroll as the home screen. It blends right into the space like framed art when we’re not watching anything.

To complete that side of the room, I installed a set of wireless sconces from Amazon above the dresser and on either side of the Frame TV. These sconces are a simple way to add lighting without dealing with hardwiring. They give off a soft, warm glow and make the room feel cozy.

Primary bedroom After

Looking back at the “before,” the room just felt flat and unfinished. Now, it feels like a peaceful retreat with character and warmth. I love how all the elements from the bold color to the wood flooring came together in a way that feels true to our style.
Final Thoughts
This primary bedroom before and after makeover was a fun project that kept me busy when I was laid off for a few weeks last December. We had a limited budget, and these small changes brought in more personality to the space.
