Every season, I get inspired by the lookbooks that land in my mailbox. Fall especially makes me want to hit refresh on my wardrobeโcozy knits, tailored jackets, and those just-right jeans always catch my eye. But instead of running out to buy something new, I decided to challenge myself: could I recreate those same fall outfits with clothes I already own? Spoiler: yes, and it was easier than I thought. Today Iโm sharing how to recreate fall outfits with clothes you already own, plus a few outfit formulas to spark ideas for your own closet. All inspired by the latest Evereve fall mailer.
Why Shop Your Closet for Fall Fashion
When the seasons change, itโs tempting to think we need a whole new wardrobe. But the truth is, most of us already have plenty of pieces that can be styled in fresh ways. Shopping your closet not only saves money, itโs also sustainable and pushes you to get creative with what you already own.
Outfit Formula Approach
Instead of copying a look piece by piece, I like to think in terms of outfit formulas. Once you break a look down into simple building blocksโlike blazer + jeans + bootsโit becomes much easier to recreate the vibe with your own wardrobe. You donโt need the exact same pieces, just similar silhouettes or colors to make it work.
Outfit 1: Mini Skirt + Short Sleeve Sweater + Tall Boots

The catalog styled a black suede mini skirt with a short-sleeve knit and tall boots for an easy fall formula. From my closet, I swapped in a black skirt and my own knit sweaterโclose enough to capture the same effortless vibe.
Tip: Any short skirt and cozy knit works here. Black boots keep it cohesive.
Outfit 2: Printed Blouse + Wide Leg Jeans + Boots

Wide-leg denim is everywhere this season. The catalog paired them with a silky, patterned blouse and pointed-toe boots. I recreated it with a floral button-down, high-waist wide leg jeans, and tan boots.
Tip: Donโt worry if your blouse isnโt silkโany printed button-down gives the same effect.
Outfit 3: Suede Shift Dress + Short Sleeve Top + Boots

A suede dress layered over a tee is such a fun transitional look. I styled my olive green shift dress (last seen here) with a basic tee and tan boots.
Tip: If you donโt have suede, try corduroy or a neutral knit dressโit gives the same autumn texture.
Outfit 4: Feminine Blouse + Neutral Pants

The catalogโs blush tie-neck blouse felt soft and feminine. In my closet, I pulled out a textured blush blouse and paired it with suede olive green trousers and suede mules.
Tip: Focus on shape and fabric. Flowing blouses with structured pants always look chic.
Outfit 5: Black Top + Statement Denim

The catalog featured pearl-studded denim with a simple black henley. I donโt own embellished jeans, so I went with my favorite wide-leg denim and layered on a pearl-studded denim jacket for texture.
Tip: If you donโt have statement jeans, bring the detail in with a jacket, belt, or accessories.
Outfit 6: Printed Jacket + Black Trousers + Neutral Top

The catalog styled a quilted, patterned jacket with black trousers and a simple top. I recreated the look with the quilted leopard print jacket I picked up recently at a vintage market, black trousers, and an ivory tank top.
Tip: Donโt have a printed jacket? Try plaid, animal print, or even a textured blazer for the same polished but playful feel.
Tips for Making It Work Every Season
This idea isnโt just for fallโit works year-round. Once you get in the habit of breaking down outfit formulas, youโll start to see endless possibilities in your own wardrobe. The key is to try different combinations and look for those little swaps that make a big impact.
I had so much fun recreating these looks, and it reminded me how versatile my wardrobe really is. Iโd love to know which fall outfit formula you’re excited to try with pieces you already own! Let me know in the comments!
