How to Rediscover Your Wardrobe

how to rediscover your wardrobe

I need to get the most out of my wardrobe and work with what I have before shopping for a new outfit. Did you know that we wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time? One trick that I’ve tried to help make sure you’re wearing all your wardrobe is to put everything in your closet with the hangers reversed. As you wear clothes, reverse the hanger. It helps you rediscover your wardrobe, wear those forgotten pieces, and helps you weed out what you don’t love anymore or is outdated and should be donated or recycled.

Today I’m joining Fonda at Savvy Southern Chic for her Forgotten, Ignored, and Unworn series. I tried to wear one piece every day in August that I had not worn yet this season or even longer. Here’s a roundup of nine outfits put together with forgotten pieces that I wore this month! Interestingly, all of these are current trends, so there was really no reason for me not to wear them. This was a fun challenge and it really helped me rediscover my closet and look at my wardrobe in a different light.

The Ignored & Unworn: Tie Dye

This maxi dress (last seen here) is way too long. Even when I wear it knotted, I’m tripping over it. My original intent was to have it hemmed, but since it’s been 3 years, I don’t think I’ll ever get around to it. I may be putting it on Poshmark.

The Ignored & Unworn: Ruffles

This is an old Anthro top, and it used to be one of my favorites. I love the color and ruffle detail. My eyelet shorts were buried in my closet and (last seen here).

This top has been in and out of my donation pile for a few years. I never wore it but didn’t want to give it up either. Thoughts?

The Ignored & Unworn: Peplum

The forgotten piece in this outfit is the peplum top. It was from Anthro several seasons ago, but the dark floral pattern and peplum hem is still on-trend.

The Ignored & Unworn: Polka Dots

The polka dot trend is going strong, and I didn’t realize I had two forgotten pieces in my closet.

I love my summer brights, and in addition to these shorts, this top was always passed over when picking out an outfit.

The Ignored & Unworn: Palm Print

I don’t think I’ve worn this dress since this post two years ago. I made it a point to wear it a second time this month.

Both the top and shorts in the outfit below were forgotten. This paneled linen blend top is light and airy, and palm print shorts are a summer staple.

The Ignored & Unworn: Stripes

I got this striped tee two summers ago and have no idea why I haven’t worn it since. It’s bright, and the embroidered sunglasses are so fun.

Takeaways

The reverse hanger trick works. It makes you think about how you can style something differently to make it interesting again. I also need to have a better system for storing my shorts. They’re stacked in one tall pile on the shelf in my closet, so I tend to pull out what is on top and never wear the rest. I’ll definitely be doing this again with my fall and winter wardrobe. Have you ever tried the reverse hanger trick?
